Digital Literacy/Digital Citizenship
On May 23, 2013 I presented a Digital Literacy Family Night for interested MBUSD parents and students. And, on January 23, 2014 I did two sessions at MBUSD's District Parent Technology Night.
Here is a PDF version of the presentation I gave. Please remember that the slides were not intended to stand alone without my commentary, so do get in touch with me if you want to know more about the content.
Here are some of the materials that I showed and discussed during the session. The first video features what kids are doing online.

This second video provides an overview of iKeepSafe's six concepts to help families be good, safe digital citizens:
This video I shared, "You Can't Take It Back," encourages students to think about how what they post can be interpreted as bullying, even if unintentional, and can't be undone once posted.
This video, Heads Up: Stop. Think. Click, encourages students to think before they click to send any online messages.
One of the topics during the evening was how older students will want to start building a positive digital footprint. This is a video I have shared frequently with students as a preface to discussions about their digital footprints:

Family Discussion Suggestions
Here are some topics suggested for family discussion:
•Have you ever felt pestered or overwhelmed by digital communication from a friend or boy/girlfriend?
•Sometimes kids are pressured to send a sexually explicit text or photo. Has this happened to you?
•Do you think this might be happening to any of your friends?
•How can we handle these uncomfortable situations to prevent them from happening?
Please contact me with any questions. Jane Lofton, Mira Costa Teacher Librarian, [email protected]
