Mrs. Lofton, Your Teacher-Librarian
My name is Jane Lofton. I am a Southern California native, but have studied and lived in Northern California; Toronto, Canada; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Plano, Texas. My husband and I now live in San Pedro. We have one grown daughter and a dog named Arlo.I graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in English. After that I completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in English Language Studies at the University of Edinburgh. I then earned an M.A. in English and an M.L.S. in Library Science at the University of Toronto. I am credentialed in English and in Teacher Librarian Services. I began my career as a librarian in a reference library in Toronto, then worked for a number of years as a technical writer in the software industry. Before coming to Mira Costa, I served as the teacher librarian at Lindero Canyon Middle School in Agoura Hills, CA from 2002-2009. During the 2009-2010 school year, I taught 7th grade English/Language Arts and a 6th grade Computer Exploratory elective at Lindero. I joined the Mira Costa staff as your Teacher Librarian in August 2010.I am passionate about school libraries, their ability to change lives and expand student experiences beyond the school walls, and the role that strong school libraries play in student achievement. I love sharing my passion for reading, research, and effective and appropriate uses of technology, and working with students, teachers, and parents. I am a Google Certified Teacher and Google Educator. I am an active member of California School Library Association (CSLA). I have served as State President, Southern Section President, Annual Conference Chair, and a member of the Curriculum Committee, Conference Committees, and Foundation Board. I am also a member of the American Library Association and its Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Division and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Division; and of International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Computer Using Educators (CUE). I am a frequent presenter at CSLA, CUE, and other conferences. I am currently a member of AASL's Best Websites for Teaching and Learning Selection Committee.I am honored to serve as Mira Costa’s Teacher Librarian, and to work with the entire student and staff encouraging reading, collaborating with teachers, and teaching research, information literacy, digital literacy, and digital citizenship skills.
